UPDATE: The developer now charges $15 for this application, as an update has been released. Sigh.

ffmpegX is a less-polished version of video converters like iSquint. It uses the power of Unix (which comes in every Mac) to convert videos to other formats. The settings are highly customizable and it works really fast. Great app for quick conversion.

Rating: 4.5/5. Fast and quick, but you may need to install some other tools first.

Miro is a unique video-watching app that lets you subscribe to video podcasts (and feeds), and lets you watch them whenever you want. The only problem is that I was having trouble starting it up on my old iMac G5. It froze my computer several times, and I finally gave up. But, when I bought my nice new Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, it ran smoothly, and is a great video app.

You should also watch your hard drive space when using Miro, because it can download up to 1 GB of space in about 20 minutes (without you realizing that it was that much). Nevertheless, it’s a great app that looks nice and works well.

Rating: 4.5/5. Great interface, but sucks RAM like a vacuum.

Personally, I would suggest using Perian over it, but VLC does have capabilities for more video types than Perian. So, if you’re caught with a video that you can’t seem to play, VLC is probably the answer for you. It really has come in handy several times for me, though.
