Flip4Mac WMV

Flip4Mac WMV is a Preference Pane that lets you play Windows Media files in Quicktime. It comes in handy all the time, and a Pro version is available (although I do not see the point of one). Great app, is useful for me frequently.

VLC

VLC is a cross-platform media player that plays many more video types than Quicktime. It doesn’t have the best looking interface, but it’s simple and easy to use. Personally, I would suggest using Perian over it, but VLC does have capabilities for more video types than Perian. So, if you’re caught with a video that you can’t seem to play, VLC is probably the answer for you. It really has come in handy several times for me, though.

Jing

Jing is a cool little screen capture app that’s currently under a lot of development. It takes screenshots and screen videos, and you can instantly upload them where you want in seconds using its built in export functions. I look forward to later versions, as this app seems to have a large development community. It’s not as easy to use as say, iShowU, but it definitely gets the job done.

Perian

Perian is an expansion to Quicktime that lets it play numerous other video codecs, like FLV or DivX files. Very, very useful because you can keep Quicktime as your main video player, and still play other video formats. Whoever made this app is a genius! Read the rest of this entry »

iSquint

iSquint is a video conversion app designed to convert almost any video to iPod or TV format. It works extremely fast and accurately, and is customizable to whatever you need it to be. Worth a download if you have Handbrake, and are frustrated by the slow iTunes video conversion process (HandBrake doesn’t make the videos in iPod format when they’re ripped).

HandBrake

HandBrake is a DVD ripping utility for Mac that will burn DVDs onto your Mac in less than real time! It’s up for “Best Mac Freeware Gem” on MacWorld.com. Just choose where you want to start ripping, and press Rip! Also be sure to download iSquint to convert your ripped videos to iPod format.
