OnyX is a system utility that repairs your system, cleans the cache, re-indexes Spotlight, lets you access hidden options in OS X, lets you run an animated desktop background, and much more. If your computer is running slow, I would suggest downloading this and repairing whatever seems necessary. It will also check your S.M.A.R.T. status and tell you whether your disk permissions need to be repaired. As with all system utilities, it will require an administrator password on startup.
